St. Everilda (also spelled Everildis, Everild, Averil) of Everingham was a Saxon saint in the seventh century who was born into the Wessex nobility In 635, she was converted to Christianity by St . Birinus, along with King Cynegils of Wessex. While still a young girl, she fled from home to become a nun, and was joined by Sts. Bega and Wuldreda.
St. Everilda ‘s Church is right at the end of Church Lane, Nether Poppleton. The stained glass in the eastern window is of late 13th Century and early 14th Century. There are some monumental effigies in the church to members of Archbishop Hutton’s family, some of whom resided in Poppleton.

The nave and chancel of the medieval church were rebuilt in the late seventeenth century and the whole church was rebuilt in 1763 by the lord of the manor, William Haggerston-Constable, to a design by architect John Carr of York. In 1871 the roof was replaced.
